.sucks Domains Quite Frankly Suck

Now, that they’ve allowed this .sucks domains by Vox Populi to enter the market and at a pretty big price tag I might add they’ve really opened the door to many more. It’s bad enough they’ve allowed this one, but now all the creative names they can come up with are open to being approved by ICANN for sale and it’s going to be a booming business for certain for those companies who sell these domain names …

If we allow ourselves to buy into it.

Okay, so what if we buy our .sucks domains name? First I personally have no use for a domain like that. I mean really what will I do with it? What will most of us as small business owners do with such a name?

Do you have trademarks or copyrights in place? Did you know it’s up to you to enforce them? If you don’t purchase your .sucks domains and someone else does then you have to pay to fight them to get it taken down. If you do nothing at either front then you are not protecting your trademarks or copyrights and this is considered allowing them to be diluted and will make it harder for you to enforce later.

Obviously, we don’t want someone else to buy our personal, business, or otherwise domain names with .sucks attached to it and free to do with it as they please. Depending on our circumstances and whoever gets a hold of it they can do great harm to our business or personal brand if they so choose.

Is this something we as small business owners really need to be concerned about? Are you jumping on the bandwagon to purchase your .sucks domains and if so then what? Are you going to jump on the next bandwagon when they come with up 1000’s of other gTLD’s (generic Top Level Domains) that are just as creative and outrageous and can cause potential harm to others?

Unless, you’re purchasing under the sunrise period which is until June 19th now and paying a whopping $2499, you will be paying $249 for this domain name unless of course you don’t mind your .sucks domains being redirected to a Vox Populi run discussion forum then you can get by on $10. I don’t think I’d want my domain directed to another businesses discussion forum – just my thoughts on that one.

What if they come up with 1000’s of gTLD’s that can potentially cause equal damage as .sucks. This could easily become a booming industry for those who are selling domain names and cost the consumers an insurmountable amount of cash. I don’t know about you,  but personally I think it’s wrong that it was allowed in the first place but it was. So now what? What will you be doing?

Or do you think this whole thing has been blown out of proportion by naysayers and we should let well enough alone and it will eventually die down?

Personally, I will be letting well enough alone because there a million and one ways if someone really wanted to hurt my business via a domain name or website that they could. My plan of action is to keep on doing what I’ve always done. Treat my clients with respect, take care of their needs, and do my level best to deliver high quality services at all times. If and when I make a mistake (because ultimately I will) I will do my level best to resolve it in a professional and compassionate manner …

but I am a small business owner and not as likely to be attacked as say a movie or rock star or maybe a big corporation.
